How to Legally Get Married in Lake Como, Italy

If you have always dreamed of saying “I do” beside the shimmering waters of Lake Como, you might be wondering how to make it legally recognised. A wedding in Italy can be both romantic and fully official, as long as you follow the correct legal steps.

At Lake Como Weddings by Chelsea, we guide couples from around the world through every part of the process through our wedding planner services across Lake Como, making sure your wedding is beautiful, stress-free, and legally valid in your home country.

Step 1: Choose the Type of Ceremony

Before anything else, decide whether you want a civil, religious, or symbolic ceremony.

  • Civil ceremonies are legally binding and performed by an Italian registrar, usually in a Town Hall or authorised villa.

  • Religious ceremonies can also be legally binding if performed by a priest authorised by the Italian State, such as a Catholic wedding where both civil and religious rites are combined.

  • Symbolic ceremonies have no legal paperwork and are ideal if you prefer to complete the legalities at home and hold a romantic celebration in Italy.

If you are unsure which option is right for you, see our guide to Civil vs Symbolic Weddings in Italy for a full comparison.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

To hold a legal wedding in Lake Como, you will need specific documents depending on your nationality. In most cases, couples must provide:

  • Valid passports for both partners

  • Full birth certificates

  • Proof of termination of any previous marriage (divorce decree or death certificate, if applicable)

  • A Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) or equivalent document confirming you are free to marry

  • Translations of all documents into Italian, legalised with an Apostille

We provide a full list of requirements and guidance for your nationality on our Lake Como Legal Wedding Documents page.

Step 3: Obtain a Nulla Osta or Certificate of No Impediment

The Nulla Osta or Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) is the most important document in the legal process. It confirms there is no legal reason you cannot marry.

  • UK citizens apply for a CNI through their local registry office, which must then be legalised with an Apostille and translated into Italian.

  • US citizens obtain a Nulla Osta from the US Embassy in Italy.

  • Other nationalities will follow similar procedures depending on their country’s requirements.

Your planner will help you navigate these steps and confirm exactly which offices or embassies you will need to contact.

Step 4: Make the Declaration of Intent to Marry

Once in Italy, you must sign a Declaration of Intent to Marry at the local Town Hall where your ceremony will take place. This appointment usually happens a few days before the wedding.

If you do not speak Italian, a translator is legally required at this appointment and during the ceremony. Learn more about this on our Translator Requirements page.

Step 5: The Ceremony

A civil ceremony in Lake Como is typically performed by the local registrar and lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. It includes the reading of Italian and English legal vows, followed by the exchange of rings and signing of the marriage register.

Two witnesses over the age of 18 are required to sign the documents. If you do not have witnesses, we can arrange them for you. See Must We Have Witnesses? for more information.

Step 6: After the Ceremony

Once the ceremony is complete, you will receive an Italian marriage certificate (Estratto per Riassunto), which is your official proof of marriage. We can help you obtain additional certified copies and ensure they are correctly translated and legalised for recognition in your home country.
